What is Yaraana?
Yaraana (transl. "Friendship") is a 1995 Bollywood romantic thriller film that tells the story of Lalita, a young woman who is forced to marry JB, a wealthy and obsessive man who kidnaps her and keeps her under his control. One day, Lalita manages to escape from JB and meets Raj, a kind-hearted man who falls in love with her. However, JB soon finds out that Lalita is still alive and tracks her down, threatening to ruin her happiness with Raj.
Plot summary
Lalita (Madhuri Dixit) catches the eye of JB (Raj Babbar) and he immediately falls in love with her and decides he must marry her. He bribes Lalita's uncle Madanlal (Tej Sapru) into convincing Lalita to marry him. However, Lalita refuses and JB kidnaps her and forces her to marry him. He keeps her in his home under constant surveillance and does not allow her to have any contact with the outside world. He also abuses her physically and mentally.
One fateful night, Lalita faints during a party and uses this opportunity to escape from JB. She also moves her mother away and barely escapes JB who assumes that she has been killed after he sees her being hit by a car. In fact, Lalita swapped her wedding dress with someone else, so the person that JB saw being hit by the car was not Lalita.
Lalita escapes the city and meets Raj (Rishi Kapoor) whose family consists of an elderly grandfather (Kader Khan) who dotes on him and wants him to get married at any cost. Raj and Lalita fall in love with each other and his grandfather also approves of Lalita. Raj and Lalita are about to get married. However, JB finds out that Lalita is still alive through her mother and quickly traces her. JB tells Raj and his grandfather who Lalita really is with the help of her devious uncle. Lalita is taken away by JB and is forced to be a dutiful wife, which in JB's terms means that she has to stay with him forever.
After hiding and frustration, Lalita decides to take matters into her own hands. She confronts JB and tells him that she hates him and loves Raj. She also reveals that she has recorded his confession of kidnapping her and bribing her uncle. She threatens to expose him to the police if he does not let her go. JB tries to kill Lalita but Raj arrives in time to save her. Raj fights with JB and manages to overpower him. He then takes Lalita away with him while JB is arrested by the police.
